2015 Sandown Stakes Likely for Coronation Shallan

November 11th, 2015

Coronation Shallan ran a pleasing seventh amongst classy competition in the featured Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington over the weekend, and appears poised to back up in Saturday’s Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m).

Jumping from the gates well in the Emirates Stakes, jockey Michael Dee pressed Coronation Shallan forward and settled in prime position on the heels of Turn Me Loose, but was unable to match the necessary pace to the finish.

Trainer Brett Scott was thrilled with the mare’s performance in the Emirates Stakes and is confident the conditions of Saturday’s 2015 Sandown Stakes will play directly into the strengths of his runner.

“I thought it was probably as good as she could go,” Scott told AAP of the Emirates Stakes.

“At this stage we’re contemplating (running at Sandown), she seems to have pulled up well.

“I’m probably leaning towards the Sandown Stakes against the boys because under the set weights and penalties in the Summoned Stakes she doesn’t get in that well with the fifty-eight kilos.

“In the Sandown Stakes she gets in on the minimum with fifty-four.”

Posting five wins and a further eleven minors through 26 career starts so far, Coronation Shallan returned to racing this year for consecutive sixth place finishes in each of the PFD Fresh To Go Handicap (1200m) and PSC Insurance Brokers BM90 (1500m) through May before placing second in the Adapt Australia BM84 (1600m).

Running third in the Friends Of Epworth Handicap (1600m) on June 20th, Coronation Shallan continued to impress in taking out the Winter Championship Handicap (1600m) before placing third in the Listed Winter Championship Final (1600m) on July 11th.

Running on for fourth in the Quest Moonee Valley BM90 (1200m) on October 2nd, the Strategic mare ran third in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) and produced a career-best effort to date to win the Group 3 Tesio Stakes (1600m) a fortnight prior to the Emirates Stakes.

The 2015 Sandown Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
