Having stamped his claims as a serious racing contender in his Australian debut last time out, classy three-year-old Pornichet has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite in Sandown Stakes betting markets and is currently available at odds of $2.40 for success ahead of Red Bomber ($4.20) and Speediness ($5) at Ladbrokes.com.au.

With Pornichet justify favouritism and win the 2014 Sandown Stakes, or will one of his classy rivals find the line in the clear?

Speediness ($5)

While unable to match the late pace when blocked for a run in the featured Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) last weekend, rainfall over the Sandown track in the days leading up to this weekend’s race card is sure to instil Speediness as one of Saturday’s best bets at current odds. Unlucky not to have broken through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing so far, Speediness ran fourth in each of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and third in the Emirates Stakes over an impressive 2013 Spring Carnival; returning in autumn this year for similarly competitive results, highlighted by a close second in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m). Having steadily built to the task over five starts this time in, highlighted by a close second in the Toorak Handicap, trainer Colin Scott has been thrilled with Speediness’ progression this weekend and is confident of a return to the winner’s circle from barrier 3.

Pornichet ($2.40)

Claiming three wins and three minors over his short nine race career so far, Pornichet has secured several impressive results in 2014 and is a great chance of figuring in the 2014 Sandown Stakes top three. Winning a minor over 1700m in his native France first-up on February 13th, Pornichet continued to build in form and class via victory in the Prix Prince Hindou (1600m) and a strong third placing in the Group 1 Poule D’Essai Des Poulains (1600m) on May 11th. While unable to figure when ninth in the Group 1 Belmont Derby (2011m) in North America on July 5th, an impressive performance for fourth in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) in his Australian debut on Derby Day registers the Vespone colt as a serious chance of success in the Sandown Stakes.

Lady Lakshmi ($10)

Cutting in from opening odds of $13 to register as clear market mover and outright fourth-favourite in Sandown Stakes betting markets, Lady Lakshmi has returned to racing in typically good form this season and is more than worth consideration for a bet at current odds. While unlucky to be blocked for a run and squeezed out in the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day, the Lonhro mare ran third in a minor over 1200m first-up this time before placing third in the Poyser Isuzu Trucks BM90 (1400m) on October 29th.
